Aspenrare Current Bloodlines

Above are pictures of Coal and Matrix, I will be breeding Coal daughters to Matrix and Matrix daughters to Coal, in order to produce athletic functional bulldogs, with a balance of muscle and ability. What I like to call “Light Heavyweights“ strong enough for knock out power yet light enough to retain ability, agility, and stamina. Snowbird was 70 lbs, perhaps the best hog catching bulldog, yet there was no way she would ever stop a man. Country Boy at 110 was a violent man stopper, but would never be able to stop a hog without costing him serious injury or even death. Our goal is to balance the two, not too big, not too small, and of course look like a bulldog.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

Why Aspenrare?

History of breeding quality, distinctive bulldogs for over 15 years.

How did you get Black and Chocolate bulldogs?

Selected breeding and an understanding of basic genetics. It became obvious early that dominant colored bulldogs, will throw dominant colored offspring. For example, a 50/50 black/white AB crossed with a dominate 90/10 red/white AB, will throw 90/10 black dogs. There are only two combinations of genes that will result in a Chocolate bulldog. Which makes Chocolate one of the rarest of the colors, although through selective breeding with two outside sources they can be readily bred for and consistent. On the contrary there are four combinations of genes to produce a Black bulldog, making this an easier venture. Although it is a little more complicated than that, this program will produce black or chocolate AB’s if I choose to do so, though its not overly important. However, when everthing else is equal I will always prefer color with my bulldogs.

Why did you decide to bred color into your American Bulldogs that were orginally white?

In 1997 I sought to add color into my lines, due to the fact that my double bred Kombat and double bred Hillbilly son Gen Lee were throwing 33% deaf bulldogs. I focused on Azlan and Vader Red, due primarily to the fact that both bulldogs, were high driven, intelligent, bold with stable temperaments yet if turned on had the physical ability and tenacity to stop a man if the situation warrant it. Kombat was a fearless a dog as one could image, her sweet nature with her family was met with an absolute hatred for strangers. Of all the characteristic praise that I have been given by those that have owned one of my bulldogs the one that brings the most pleasure is intelligence. The toughest, most capable bulldog is only dangerous if it lacks the ability to access. So color is necessary to stop deafness in my lines, but my priority has always been temperament, intelligence and ability.

What are your breeding goals?

"The breed within the breed", I want my lines to have a unique stature. "That’s an Aspenrare Bulldog." I believe that I have done that, as I outcross, I will venture into some diversity in appearance, yet since all my lines are tightly bred, each litter will be stamped by dominant genes.

Why did you close your website in 2005?

Obviously, we are not a puppy mill, producing 1.6 litters per year focusing on quality, not quantity. In 2005 I closed my website, due to the fact that I experienced prolapsed uterus in half my females from one of my breedings. I spent a lot of time and effort focusing on where the genetic defect originated from, spent the next several years re-organizing my program, and insuring that the bloodlines in question were no longer dominant in my program. If I’m willing to close my doors for four years in order to ensure quality bulldogs, with no regard to cost, isn’t it evident that the bottom line is and has always been quality bulldogs, Free of genetic complications, possessing unparalleled abilities with distinctive physical characteristics.

Buyer beware.

If a breeder tells you that they have no genetic faults in their bloodline, they either don’t know, or don’t care. Don’t know because they bought the dogs from someone else and lack the knowledge of the bloodlines. Don’t care, because they will only be in business long enough to sell a few litters, try to make some money and jump on the next money train, poodles perhaps.
